The Merchant of Taupo is Taupo’s leading food and wine specialist wholesaler/retailer. 16 years ago then proprietor Bruce Grant developed a diverse consumer friendly business, offering opportunity to taste and purchase some of the very best of NZ gourmet produce and wines. We sometimes have items from across the waters too…! From French cheeses to single malts, The Merchant of Taupo sources only premium products for the local and national market.

The Merchant is not a just a shop to buy something special. We have a regular clientele who factor us into their everyday shopping buying daily - beer, bread, cheese, fish, wine, eggs….

Fresh foods feature with regular delivery of fresh fish direct from the filleting rooms in Hawke’s Bay & Christchurch, Bay Cuisine supplies amazing meats, local farm fresh eggs, Rachel Scott ciabatta, honeycomb, small goods compliments of Harrington’s and other gourmet perishables can be found here.

Located on one of the main roads in Taupo, we are easy to find and very accessible. There is plenty of car parking off the road and we provide a convenient drive-through facility. If heading north on SHI, turn right at the Woolworths roundabout and travel a few hundred metres up Spa Rd to find us on the left hand side.

The Merchant has a team of long serving (and patient) staff who ensure every customer is treated as special. Cheryl (Blondie) and Susan (Bean) have helped develop the business over the past fifteen years. You can be assured of a warm welcome at The Merchant with honest friendly service.
The Merchant also supplies trade and offers a full service for any functions. Weddings, conferences, special events? Ask us! We can supply all your catering needs from wine, beer, spirits, splits to glasses. We co-ordinate with your preferred caterer and guarantee delivery.
